[PT] Quando se pensa ou se planeja uma viagem à Patagônia, provavelmente uma visita a El Calafate é um dos pontos mais aguardados – mais especificamente à geleira Perito Moreno que fica a 75km da cidade.
De fato, a geleira Perito Moreno impressiona. Se fosse apostar, diria que já se usaram todos os superlativos da língua portuguesa (e também de outras línguas) para descrevê-la de tão magnífica que é. E acrescento que não há exagero, quiçá injustiça. Pois há lugares que apenas se sentem, não se descrevem.
A geleira de Perito Moreno desce do Campo de Hielo Sur, na região sul da Cordilheira dos Andes, e seus imponentes paredões de gelo de 70 metros de altura avançam da montanha em direção ao Lago Argentino. Sua cor azul é bela e única, e mesmos as melhores fotos não conseguem capturar sua beleza, que fica reservada apenas àqueles que a observam presencialmente.
É um passeio bem especial, e também muito fácil de se fazer. A geleira de Perito Moreno, como outras próximas, fica localizada dentro do Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. O Parque é muito bem organizado e bem pensado, e o acesso é muito simples, via estrada asfaltada desde a cidade de El Calafate. Lá dentro, existem sistemas de passarelas que permitem ao visitante observar a geleira de diversos ângulos e distâncias, algumas chegando bem próximos. Todas muito bem cuidadas e sinalizadas. Com muita sorte, você verá um pedaço da geleira se desprender e cair no lago, acompanhado do característico barulho de trovão que o gelo faz quando se parte. Imperdível.
Melhor que as passarelas, faça um passeio de barco para ver as geleiras de perto, navegando pelo lago. Existem duas opções de passeio, cada uma por uma face da geleira, que saem de lugares diferentes do parque. Os ingressos (não tão baratos, que se saiba) podem ser adquiridos no mesmo dia do passeio, nas respectivas bilheterias. Vale bastante a pena, navegamos perto da geleira, em meio aos pedaços de gelo, e já sentindo no rosto o delicioso vento frio que sopra desde o Campo de Hielo.
Muito melhor que o passeio de barco, faça o trekking na própria geleira. Sim, é possível e também bastante recomendável (e caro, aviso). Dia antes de entrar no parque, ainda na cidade de El Calafate, procure a agencia que faz o trekking na geleira. De lá você receberá as instruções para um dos melhores passeios da Patagônia. No dia do trekking, a agência te buscará e levará ao parque, e depois de cruzar o lago em um barco, começarão os preparativos.
Dadas as explicações sobre o funcionamento das geleiras, especialmente da Perito Moreno, e colocados os grampões, o guia nos leva a uma caminhada sobre o gelo. Passando por fendas, pequenos córregos de água gelada, seguimos caminhando por aquele gelo milenar e nos emocionando com a linda paisagem, seja para qualquer lado que se olhe. O trekking termina da melhor forma – com um brinde àquele maravilhoso passeio.
E as crianças? Adoraram o passeio! As atrações são acessíveis a elas, independente da idade, com exceção do trekking na geleira. Apenas neste caso, melhor elas esperarem crescer um pouco.
E para chegar lá no Parque Nacional Los Glaciares? Muito fácil. A cidade de El Calafate, base para visitação da geleira, tem aeroporto e voos regulares para Buenos Aires. Ademais, tem excelente infraestrutura para o turismo, contando com diversas opções de hotéis e restaurantes.
Se vier de carro, para ir até El Calafate as estradas são muito boas partindo de Buenos Aires – e todas asfaltadas principalmente pela Ruta 3 (litoral argentino). Talvez em algum entroncamento da Ruta 3 para a Ruta 40 você pegue um trecho de rípio, mas não é muito.
Se tiver mais alguns dias, aproveite também para visitar El Chaltén, uma cidadezinha a 250km ao norte de El Calafate, que é um dos melhores lugares da Patagônia para apreciar montanhas e fazer trekkings leves e mais pesados.

The Perito Moreno Glacier descends from the Southern Ice Field (Campo de Hielo Sur), in the southern Andes Mountains, and its imposing 70-meter-high ice walls advance from the mountain towards Lake Argentino. Its blue color is beautiful and unique, and even the best photos can not capture its beauty, which is reserved only for those who observe it in person.
It is a very special tour, and also very easy to do. The Perito Moreno glacier, like other nearby glaciers, is located within the Los Glaciares National Park. The Park is very well organized and well planned, and access is very simple, via tarmac road from the city of El Calafate. Inside the park, there are systems of walkways that allow the visitor to observe the glacier from various angles and distances, some coming very close. All very well maintained and signposted. Luckily, you’ll see a piece of glacier peel off and fall into the lake, accompanied by the characteristic thunderous noise the ice makes when it breaks. Amazing.
Better than the walkways, take a boat trip to see the glaciers up close, navigating the lake. There are two options for boat trips, each goes to a different side of the glacier, and each leaves from different places in the park. Tickets (not so cheap) can be purchased the same day of the tour, at the respective box office. The boat trip is awesome, as we navigate near the glacier, amidst the pieces of ice, and we can feel in our faces the delicious cold wind that blows from the ice field.
Much better than the boat trip, go and do the trekking on the glacier itself. Yes, it is possible and also quite recommendable (and expensive, please be warned). Day before entering the park, still in the city of El Calafate, look for the agency that does the trekking in the glacier. From there you will receive instructions for one of the best tours in Patagonia. On the day of trekking, the agency will pick you up and take you to the park, and after crossing the lake on a boat, preparations will begin.
You will receive the explanations on how the glaciers work, especially the Perito Moreno, and after the crampons are placed, the guide takes us on a walk on the ice. Passing through crevices, small streams of cold water, we continue walking through that ancient ice and being marveled with the beautiful landscape, wherever you look. The trek ends in the best way – with a toast to that wonderful tour.
And the kids? Ours loved the tour! The attractions are accessible to them, regardless of age, with the exception of trekking on the glacier. Only in this case, it is not recommendable.
And how to get to Los Glaciares National Park? Very easy. The city of El Calafate, base for visitation of the glacier, has an airport and regular flights from Buenos Aires. In addition, it has excellent infrastructure for the tourism, counting on diverse options of hotels and restaurants.
If you come by car, the roads to El Calafate starting from Buenos Aires are in very good shape – and in tarmac. Maybe at some junction from Route 3 to Route 40 you take gravel road, but it’s not much.
If you have a few more days, take time to visit El Chaltén, a small town 250km north of El Calafate, which is one of the best places in Patagonia to enjoy mountains and go for light or heavy trekking.
